4 Big Things

4 Big Things – September 17, 2021

Here are the four best things I read, listened to, or learned in the past week.

1) Entrepreneur Education

In one sentence: We have LOTS of proposed tax changes heading our way, not the final legislation but a good indication of what it will look like.

My biggest takeaway: Great breakdown of key elements from @cpaplanner but some of the big changes are going to be hitting much lower income amounts than the original Biden proposal. Of particular interest to entrepreneurs is that the 3.8% investment surtax would be added to S-corp income in excess of $400k (single) and $500k (married). Paired with a new top rate of 39.6% on that income comes out to 43.4%!

2) Lessons for Living

In one sentence: There is a ‘Goldilocks zone’ of the perfect amount of free time each day.

My biggest takeaway: @adammgrant hits this perfectly. Most of us never want to retire or cease to make a difference but we all way more agency over how we spend our time. The ideal balance would seem to be a fairly even split between time for recreation/fitness/leisure, time for work we find meaningful, and time for family and others.

3) Things I’m still learning about

In one sentence: How much of how we look at the world is unquestioned?

My biggest takeaway: What do I do or think or say that I have never really examined? Love these little nuggets that make me remember how little I actually know. Thanks for the reminder @egocv!

4) Crypto Corner

In one sentence: The Solana network spent about 12 hours down earlier this week.

My biggest takeaway: As a competitor to Etherium Solana has attracted users quickly and built a $4B market cap but these platforms are all building on the fly and there WILL be issues going forward. As all these networks and applications mature it will be fascinating to see how they grow and stabilize.
