Here are the four best things I read, listened to, or learned in the past week.
1) Entrepreneur Education
In one sentence: Remember when everyone was amazed at Facebook acquiring Instagram and all 13 employees for $1B back in 2012?
My biggest takeaway: We can all apply this lesson in our businesses. We have gone from needing to hire more people to increase the value of our services or products and keep up with demand to looking at technology to fill those roles. Adding headcount should only happen when we can’t find a technology solution or tech-enabled vendor to fit the need. Our people are still our most valuable resource but businesses need to leverage technology wherever possible.
2) Lessons for Living
In one sentence: The movement toward quality of life v optimized for work keeps getting stronger after COVID-19.
My biggest takeaway: Great thread on the thought process on relocating somewhere more rural and open by @Julian. The availability of Starlink and other satellite internet providers is a game-changer for location preference for knowledge workers. Why live in a congested metro area with traffic, pollution, and a high cost of living when you can do the same or better work from a beautiful location surrounded by nature. I write this surrounded by golden aspen leaves in Breckenridge, CO!
3) Things I’m still learning about
In one sentence: AngelList continues to create massive value for founders and companies with new solutions.
My biggest takeaway: Decreasing the friction around forming a company, raising capital, and incentivizing key employees is a massive win, especially for first-time founders. Imagine getting all your organization docs, cap table, and equity documentation built in a turn-key solution for a fraction of what it would cost to assemble those with individual attorneys and tech providers. Huge need met by AngelList here!
4) Crypto Corner
In one sentence: Dad jokes + Crypto = I had to share it.
My biggest takeaway: So much happening in crypto and blockchain each and every week, take a quick second and check out @messaricrypto if you want to dive into a specific project, coin, or DAO – great coverage from this team!
